FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MICRO FOCUS ENTERPRISELINK NOW OFFERS WEB SERVICES FOR LEGACY APPLICATIONS

—Enhanced offering integrates Web services to legacy applications in 30 days or less without code modification —

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 30, 2002 ¾ Micro Focus International Ltd. (Micro FocusÒ), today announced the latest version of its highly-scalable legacy-to-Web transformation and integration solution, EnterpriseLink®, which seamlessly provides Web services to legacy applications.  The updated EnterpriseLink product allows current legacy applications to operate within the newest technologies in less than 30 days while maintaining the integrity of the existing mission-critical assets.  The solution provides immediate Web services access for clients built with Microsoft .NET Studio and allows reuse of legacy assets in a low-risk, high-ROI environment.

"EnterpriseLink has proven to be the fastest way for our product, the WebAccel framework, to connect to legacy systems through a Web services interface," said Cory Isaacson, president of CompuFlex, Inc. a provider of innovative tools and expertise for migrating to Java-based Web technologies. "Micro Focus helped us connect to our customers’ systems from our WebAccel product following standard protocols such as XML, HTTP and SOAP.  We were most impressed by Micro Focus’ ability to do this without modification of our customers’ legacy applications and without installing new code on their mainframes."

By providing a Web services interface, EnterpriseLink now enables companies to establish an XML-based, language-neutral connection to  “green screen” mainframe applications.  As a result,

companies can get their legacy applications up and running on the Web or other client/server platforms in a matter of days instead of months.  Available on November 1, 2002, the new version of EnterpriseLink is deployable in UNIX and Windows environments to move legacy applications to Web services more quickly than with manual recoding.  A study conducted by DePaul University in October 2001 showed that projects are completed up to 25 times faster using EnterpriseLink than with Java recoding.  In addition, transformation with EnterpriseLink exposes companies to less risk than changing a mainframe application directly and is less expensive than staff-heavy recoding operations.

“The latest version of EnterpriseLink provides companies the lowest total cost of ownership of any legacy-to-Web solution,” said Mark Haynie, vice president of enterprise extension at Micro Focus.  “In addition, the product offers businesses a complete solution that requires no additional effort to bridge the gap between legacy applications and Web services.  Our technology has the unique ability to scale to production workloads of up to 10,000 users, meeting the demands of businesses that require high performance production under high-stress workloads.”

            With the new Web services features of EnterpriseLink, companies now can:

·         Capture host screens and their relationships without analysing or modifying source code;

·         Construct Web services interfaces to those applications with a simple drag-and-drop interface that follow standard XML Document Type Definition (XML DTD) and Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) formats;

·         Allow the generation of Web service client applications through Microsoft .NET Studio as well as other tools;

·         Allow the same EnterpriseLink project to be accessed from several client types, each expecting a different protocol, such as HTML (web browsers), XML (Java applications), Web service clients, WML and PDF;

·         Complement the existing SmartCOM capability in EnterpriseLink allowing Microsoft COM applications, C++, Visual Basic and Active Server page, in addition to SmartJ allowing Internet-based Java applications and Java Server Page (JSP) applications access to legacy data;

·         Ensure optimal performance and 24/7 availability with load-balancing, fail-over support and non-hierarchical clustering.
